UW Bothell

UWB Education does not seem to have non-similar multiple endorsement candidates but we will be in that category the following academic year when we should be approved for the ELL endorsement.  We have students who earn, say, social studies, history and English but those are similar enough or elementary education and one of the three Middle Level endorsements.   Our hope is that candidates can simultaneously earn the elementary education (K8) or a secondary (multiple content areas to choose) endorsement and the ELL.  But I am not sure if actually our students should not be asked to do two TPA’s as those two are different!

UW Tacoma

Elem/SPED and Elem/TELL

1

Elem/SPED = 30 weeks, Elem/TELL = 20 weeks

Elem/SPED has a thirty week internship covering both endrosements focused on RTI therefore including all kids in gen ed classroom.. Elem/TELL has a twenty week internship covering both endrosements and are only placed in classrooms with a large number of English language learners.*To increase program coherence and strengthen relationships with local schools, Project Response to Intervention (RTI) engaged in a systematic process of developing partner schools to provide well-designed and coordinated field experiences for Dual Track (general K-8 and special education) candidates.  The process has involved shifting from placement of teacher candidates with individual teachers to a model that engages the university and selected districts/schools in an ongoing collaboration toward the development of a residency program that integrates experiences in both general and special education.
All of the Project RTI partner schools are committed to working collaboratively with the university in an RTI model that focuses on prevention of school failure through the implementation of evidence-based practices for all children.
Our dual option for K-8/Tell started this summer. We are developing a partnership with schools such as we have done for K-8/SPED.

Walla Walla University

1 or 2 - see remarks

At Walla Walla we do not have any modality of Elementary endorsement, but simply elementary.  Our only issue is an elementary candidate who chooses a secondary endorsement as well, for example, Elementary+Secondary History, or Elementary+Secondary Math.  In these cases, we have been asking to do two ppa’s in two separate student teaching placements, but the secondary being less time in the classroom—just a few classes enough to administer the ppa.  Other times, we have placed these double-endorsement people in upper elementary grades to gain experience in both and do assessments in both.  This quarter with the tpa we have been asking them to do two tpa’s, but submit only one.  We believe that it would be choking to require two or more tpa’s in any case.

Washington State University

Ele or Sec and SpEd  Beginning fall 2012 newly admitted elementary majors will be required to complete a second endorsement in ML Math, ML Science or ELL

1 or 2 - see remarks

Sixteen weeks

Candidates completing a SpEd endorsement do 5-7 weeks in a sped placement.  For the ML or ELL endorsements, candidates will spend their extended observation at the end at the middle level or in a classroom with ELL. There is concern that asking districts for two placments will impact our abilty to make placements.

10 weeks each

We have robust assessment systems in place for all endorsements, including program coursework, academic content, student teaching evaluations, and West-E exams. So, for example our dual-endorsement (ELED/SPED) candidates would need to demonstrate competency in each of those areas based on assessments aligned to state standards. Completing a second TPA would be a financial hardship and may cause students to not pursue additional endorsements due to the additional financial burden.   The WAC currently does not require field experiences for additional endorsements and there are good reasons for this.   To require the TPA for each endorsement earned with the certificate could lead to a dramatic decrease in the number of multiple endorsements earned by our new teachers. It may not be possible to find an internship/field placement for every endorsement to be earned within the planned time for completion of the certification program. And, in the case where multiple placements could be arranged, the added cost is prohibitive.  There are implications for practicing teachers in terms of time and cost as well.                                                                                *first practicum working with ELL; Second with strong focus on teaching reading                                                                                                **We strongly encourage students to consider dual endoresments (for exampe science and math) which require them to engage in one primary placement with a second placement in the other academic area; Also, each endorsement (for example, TESOL) requires its own practicum/internship.

Whitworth University

A large number of our elementary candidates also earn an endorsement in Reading and/or other areas such as ELL, Math, etc.

1

A semester-long student teaching internship is completed by undergrad and evening teacher cert candidates.
MIT candidates complete afull year internship.

Undergraduate and ETC complete three 30 hour practica in multiple content areas.  In addition, all candidates (undergrad, MIT & ETC) complete a two to three week-long full-time intercultural immersion experience. Some of our undergraduates, because they are enrolled at WU for four years, have the opportunity to complete 3 and somethimes 4 endorsements, making them highly qualified, capable and effective practitioners; for example elementary ed, sped, early childhood sped and ELL.

Our special education endorsement is always combined with either a K-8 or subject-specific secondary endorsement.

In addition to the above, special education candidates complete 4 practica experiences consisting of both elementary and secondary placements for a total of 300+ hours.

Many secondary-endorsed candidates earn dual endorsements.

Similar to SPU, student teaching candidates may seek endorsements in numerous combinations.
