Residency Certification Timeline

    This timeline is intended for individuals who have been issued a residency teacher certificate.  Washington Residency Certification is undated until the required experience is obtained.  Once a teacher receives a dated three-year certificate then the individual follows the chart below.



    Three‐Year Certificate / Steps to Earning Professional Certificate*:

    1. Consider enrolling in support program;
    2. Plan your ProTeach Portfolio registration to allow time for resubmission, if necessary;
    3. Submit to ProTeach Portfolio prior to certificate expiration date.

    Pass ProTeach = earn Professional Certificate
    OR
    1. Failed – Eligible for two year renewal
    2. Break in service – allow to lapse AND eligible for renewal when returning to teaching
    3. No break in service – complete and sign affidavit with certification office for 1st renewal

    1st Two‐Year Renewal:


    Once receiving the 1st Two‐year renewal teachers MUST complete and submit ProTeach.


     
     
    Pass ProTeach = earn Professional Certificate
    OR
    1. Failed ProTeach – eligible for 2nd Two‐Year renewal 
    2. Break in service – allow to lapse AND eligible for 2nd Two‐Year renewal when returning to teaching 
    OR
    No Break in Service and failed to REGISTER and SUBMIT ProTeach – License Expires**

    2nd Two‐Year Renewal:


    Once receiving 2nd Two‐Year renewal teachers MUST complete, submit and PASS ProTeach.

     


    Pass ProTeach = earn Professional Certificate
    OR
    Fail or fail to register and submit ProTeach – License Expires** 

    * Teachers who hold / earn National Board Certification are also awarded the Professional Certificate
    **Reinstatement after 5 years and new employment plus registration for ProTeach
